“Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” —Matthew 5:48
Sung in 184.108.40.206.7.7. meter to the tune of “Toplady.” A familiar hymn sung to Toplady is Augustus Toplady’s famous hymn, “A Living and Dying Prayer for the Holiest Believer in the World,” or more popularly known as “Rock of Ages.”
Be Ye Therefore Perfect
(Mercy’s Display in Christ and Manifestation in the Redeemed of God)
by Jon Cardwell
You have heard it has been said
Love your neighbor, hate your foes;
But Christ commands, Love all those
That are en’mies, fill’d with woe.
Bless them freely, curse them not;
To show mercy is your lot.
Do good to them who hate you;
Whether Gentile whether Jew.
Pray for them though you are used,
Wrongly hated and abused.
Nothing they do takes your life;
It’s eternally in Christ.
When this happens it displays,
You’ve been sav’d the Father’s way.
Jesus died to set men free,
Suffer’d wrath upon that tree;
Curse of sin upon His head,
For men’s sins He died and bled.
God has made the rising sun
Ev’ry day on ev’ry one.
Unrequited love goes forth
From the Father ever more;
Likewise should we do the same,
If we’re sav’d in Jesus’ name.
What perfection mercy binds
When the Father’s will is mine.
Christ has pour’d out love and grace,
Tender mercy ‘fore my face;
Mercy pour’d out from Christ’s side;
Help me take my cross and die.
