The Book of Martyrs by John Foxe, more popularly referred to as Foxe’s Book of Martyrs, and more properly addressed as Actes and Monuments, the Book of Martyrs, is a work of Christian history and martyrdom. It was first published in English in 1563 and includes, not only an historical depiction of Christian martyrs since the birth of the church, but also contains a passionate account of the sufferings of Christ under the Catholic Church, with particular emphasis on England and Scotland.
Of the few possessions John Bunyan was allowed to keep with him during his twelve-year imprisonment in the Bedford Jail were the Holy Bible and John Foxe’s Book of Martyrs.
