For the Preaching of the Cross

a paraphrase of

1 Corinthians 1:18-21

by Jon J. Cardwell

For the preaching of the cross is
To the lost, imprudent;
But unto us, God’s sav’d children,
God in omnipotence!

For it is written, I’ll destroy
The wisdom of wise men,
And bring to naught the intellect
They think they comprehend.

Where is the wise? the scribe? and he
Who disputes in this world?
Hath not God made the world’s wisdom
Foolish and unfurl’d?

For after that in God’s wise plan,
The world knew not the Lord;
Though in its wisdom it had tried
Apart from God’s pure Word.

Yet, it pleas’d God through redeem’d men
To preach Christ crucified;
By foolish preaching God saves those
Through faith in Him who died.

  1. This was my 1,000th post according to WordPress. I’m blessed that it had to do with Christ crucified.
