“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” —Galatians 5:1
All too quickly does our flesh rise up in its desire to turn again to the yoke of bondage, that futile burden from which we have been liberated by God’s grace in Christ Jesus. Stand fast is the apostle’s encouraging provocation— Don’t move! Stay the course! Persevere! This can only be done by clinging to the crucified and risen One; and as we cling to Christ by grace, cleaving to Him in Spirit-empowered submission, and trusting His faithfulness to bring His Father’s will to pass, Christ’s everlasting love secures us to Himself. Then, every hope of returning to legality, ceremonial observance, or justification by works is dashed to pieces upon the Rock of our salvation; and shipwrecked those hopes must become, else the flesh will find its grip on us, causing us to be tossed to and fro on the waves of instability until we are the ones dashed to pieces. Jesus Christ alone is true hope and everlasting strength.
“For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.” —Galatians 5:6
My hope is built on nothing less
than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
but wholly lean on Jesus’ name
On Christ the Solid Rock I stand;
all other ground is sinking sand,
all other ground is sinking sand.
