What are the essential elements of the Christian gospel?

There are basically five essential elements to the Christian gospel. These are biblical truths of the gospel and are non-negotiable. There are certainly more details of the gospel that help to clarify these elements and establish them more firmly and faithfully in the believer’s life, yet to add to this gospel other “essentials” or taking away from these elements as regarding one or more of these as unnecessary, would remove the gospel proposition altogether.

As Christians, we believe and trust in Jesus Christ by these truths concerning Him…

  • Christ’s Incarnation. Jesus Christ was virgin-born as the Son of God. He is very God, yet became man. Although he is God in human flesh, He is very man, fully human, and because virgin-born as the Holy One ordained to come, the Christ and Messiah of Israel, He is the only completely righteous man to walk the face of the planet since Adam’s sinful fall in the Garden of Eden.
  • Christ’s Crucifixion. The excellency and perfection of Christ’s sacrifice paid a debt He did not owe for a debt we, as sinners, owe but cannot pay. He suffered the wrath of God for our sins. He shed his blood for the forgiveness of sins. Christ died upon the cross at Calvary so that we, who are dead in trespasses and sins against God, may have life eternal in Jesus’ name.
  • Christ’s Resurrection. That Jesus Christ’s dead body was buried in the tomb for three days and nights is effectual proof that He is fully human. His bodily resurrection from the dead is effectual proof that He is eternal God. The resurrection is the proof and power that His was the Christ foretold to come and He is alive forevermore.
  • Christ’s Ascension. Jesus Christ’s ascension into heaven marks his everlasting reign as King of kings and Lord of lords, seated upon the throne of God, ruling and reigning in the lives of His people until He puts down once and for all His enemies.
  • Christ’s Consummation. There is an appointed time for the return of Christ for His own, known only to God. Jesus Christ will return in glory and judgment, unto eternal condemnation to all those who have rejected God through denying Christ, to the glory of His holy justice; and unto eternal consolation to all those to whom Christ has saved, unto the glory of God’s marvelous grace.
