In Honor of Reformation Day
by Charisse Graves
This is written to the saints who hold dear to their heart; faith alone, by Scripture alone, by grace alone, through Christ alone, and to God be the glory alone.
One of the most wonderful examples of reformation in the New Testament happened in Ephesus.
“Many also of those who had believed kept coming, confessing and disclosing their practices. And many of those who practiced magic brought their books together and began burning them in the sight of everyone; and they counted up the price of them and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So the word of the Lord grew mightily.” Acts 19:18-20
The Holy Spirit convicted the Ephesians of their sin and they turned from their wicked ways and publically renounced their evil practices. In doing so they demonstrated their faith in Christ by grace alone to the praise and glory of God, thus the Word of the Lord grew mightily!
Beloved, never before in the history of Christianity has there been a more grievous attack on Sola Scriptura then we are seeing before our eyes. The very Word of God Himself and by extension His precious Son Jesus are being trampled underfoot.
“How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?” Hebrews 10:29
How has this happened?
Under our watch as defenders of sacred Scripture we have allowed either by commission or omission a counterfeit Message to stand right next to God’s Holy, inerrant, infallible word in every Christian bookstore and church library across the globe. Where were the Bereans?
“Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.” Acts 17:11
Do we actually think this is some small insignificant matter to our awesome God?
Do we think it of no importance that people have started writing as if they are Jesus? Is it Jesus Calling? Since when is extra-biblical revelation written by a woman claiming to have received messages from Christ Himself embraced as if it were Scripture? Why is this tolerated at all?
We have abandoned the only anchor we have to Truth and now we are adrift on a sea of chaos and confusion.
Do we really prefer the human delusion of a dilapidated Shack over the glorious promise Jesus has made:
“In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am there you may be also.” John 14:2-3
Personally, my vote is for the mansion…
There was a faithful king who turned to the Lord with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might, and his name was Josiah. 2 Kings 22&23 Josiah after hearing the Word of God being proclaimed was so convicted by the Word that he tore his clothes in sorrow and set about to institute immediate reforms and tear down all of the high places that had been erected. What idols, altars and high places are there today in Christianity that need to be torn down?
Will we be like the Ephesians and get rid of our books?
Or will it be like in Isaiah’s day:
“Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying,
‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?’
Then I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’
He said, ‘Go, and tell this people:
Keep on listening, but do not perceive;
Keep on looking, but do not understand.’
Render the hearts of this people insensitive,
Their ears dull, And their eyes dim,
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
Hear with their ears,
Understand with their heart,
And return and be healed.” Isaiah 6: 8-10
My prayer is that God in His mercy will enable us to be as noble as the Bereans and as repentant as the Ephesians.
Only by His grace, Charisse Graves
