Jude’s Exhortation

“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.”Jude 1:3

Sung in Common Meter (C.M.) to the tune of “New Britain” or “El Nathan.” Familiar hymns sung to New Britain and El Nathan are “Amazing Grace” and “I Know Whom I Have Believed” respectively.

Jude’s Exhortation
by Jon Cardwell

I say to you contend for faith
And gravely stand upon
The Word of God preserv’d for you,
Which speaks of God’s own Son.

For there are men who have crept in,
Unnotic’d by and by.
Ungodly men who are condemn’d,
Who stumble saints with lies.

They’ve turn’d the grace of God into
Lasciviousness and lust;
Denying Christ, God’s only Son
Who pull’d us from the dust.

I will therefore that you recall
Salvation God did make.
He sav’d His people from their bonds
His en’mies He did break.

Now unto Him who will preserve
Your life and keep you pure;
For His own majesty and pow’r
And glory doth endure.

  1. Dear Pastor Cardwell,

    God certainly gifted you with eloquent prose! (I just realized that you actually wrote the wretched man song too, I am a little slow.)

    So glad you are making these God glorifying, Scripture rich songs available to all.

    This song is truly honey to a Christians heart:)

    Tell Lisa hello and God Bless!

    • Thank you, sister, for your encouraging words. “O Wretched Man I Am” is one my favorites. I like to sing it the tune of Azmon (“O, For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” uses that hymn melody).

      I’ve passed your greeting along to Lisa. She returns the greeting. Blessings to you.

  2. I haven’t heard too many lyrics like this.

    Very powerful.

    Thank you for posting these. They are truly a blessing.
