“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.” —Romans 8:14, 15
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” —John 1:12
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God” (Romans 8:14). As I am led, that is more literally, carried by the Spirit, I surrender to Him; and as I surrender more and more to the Spirit of God in humble subjection, He lifts me up in power to carry out that authority as a son of God.
When we were in the throes of salvation, before grace kissed our souls, the conviction of the Holy Spirit was illuminating the eternal impact and the temporal implications of sin. It was frightening. Yet, now that we have peace with God through Christ Jesus, not only are we delivered from being God’s enemy, we are deemed to be His sons and daughters by the glory of God’s grace, adopted into the kingdom of heaven, as it is written in the next verse, “For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15). As the revelation of this truth arrests us more and more, surrendering to this truth becomes more real and more certain.
