A Devotional Prayer to Begin the Day

“O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary. Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.” Psalms 63:1-3

Lord, please cause me to grow in Your grace that I may desire You more than the blessings we do certainly receive from You.

Lord, as You command us to be holy because You are holy, give me grace to desire holiness for Your sake and not for holiness’ sake.

Lord, as Your eye is upon even the sparrow, move my eyes to ever be upon You.

Lord, by Thy grace and for Thy glory…

…make me to be discerning without being sectarian.

…make me to stand firm in faith without being hard, cynical, or as one without compassion.

…make me to grow in grace, not merely in knowledge of its truth, but of the certainty of its heavenly reality centered in You, secured by You, and sufficient through You, that I may be gracious in extending Your grace to others.

…make me to walk before You in true humility and open honesty, while making me vigilant to guard against haughtiness.

…make me to tremble in awesome reverence before Your Word, hearing in it the thunders that proceed from Your throne, given for Your glory and for my benefit.

…make me to meditate often upon You as revealed through Your Word throughout the day.

…make me to remember my frailty through the revelation of Your supreme goodness, righteousness, and majesty so that I may cleave to You, cling to Your sacrificial death, and embrace Your redeeming grace according to the precious scriptures, that more sure Word of prophecy. For my flesh will wander without You, Lord. My works will seek recognition when I fail in submission; and if not kept by Your grace, Lord, I will pervert Your justice, corrupt Your mercy, blaspheme Your expedience, and mock Your longsuffering.

…make me to proclaim boldly Your love, grace, and mercy in salvation and sanctification apart from works; yet, because of Your love, grace and mercy, strengthen me to apply myself diligently and steadfastly to every grace in good works, wherein You may receive glory, honor, and praise from this earthen vessel. Keep me thankful for grace without my becoming lethargic.

…make me to see my sins that I may mourn for the dishonor it brings, seek mercy through Your blessed grace, receive cleansing by Your precious blood, and rejoice in You for the grace of repentance.

…may I ask forgiveness for even this prayer, that must ascend before Your throne by every bit of Your grace; for it is all of grace, Your grace and Yours alone.
