Red with Wine, White with Milk

His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk.” —Genesis 49:12

Preaching-Christ-Crucified“His eyes shall be red…” As Jesus of Nazareth hung upon Calvary’s tree, His thorn pierced brow dripped His precious, pure and perfect blood into the eyes of very God and very man. This crown of thorns that rested upon Christ’s head was symbolic of the truth of Adam’s curse He took upon Himself, with all authority as the Son of God incarnate:

cursed is the ground for thy sake… Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. Genesis 3:17, 18-19

He was smitten of God as the perfect Substitute, holy, righteous, and the sufficient Sacrifice without spot and blemish. YHVH God poured out His almighty fury upon the precious Lamb of God for the wickedness of every redeemed soul that God would save by grace through faith since Adam until the consummation of all things. It is written,

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: Galatians 3:13

For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. 2 Corinthians 5:21

“…red with wine…” The fruit of the ground is the grape. The fruit of heaven is the eternal Son that was born of a virgin. As the grape is crushed to produce wine, the Son of God was bruised to produce eternal life to whomsoever drinketh His blood:

Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. Isaiah 53:10

Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. John 6:53

And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Matthew 26:27-28

…his teeth white with milk.” As the Lord Christ hung upon that cross of wood, as condemned thieves cast insults in His teeth, as rulers of Israel and passersby mocked and cursed Him, from the Lord’s own mouth came the pure milk of His Words spoken, from a pure Life lived as a man, by a pure Sacrifice laid down for His people. Christ Jesus did what Adam did not do, commend His spirit unto God:

And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. Luke 23:46

The pure milk of God’s truth in Christ brings assurance that, as Christ’s spirit was commended to His heavenly Father, all who trust in Jesus Christ the Son of God, are commended to Christ Jesus by the sealing of the Holy Spirit.

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:13-14

And as we have been changed, regenerated, made new creations with the wine of Christ’s blood by the anointing oil of the Holy Spirit, we are exhorted by the pure milk of God’s Word to desire the sincere milk of God’s Word so that we may grow in grace and be strengthened with gospel faith:

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 1 Peter 2:2
