Spiritual House Cleaning Part 3
written by Charisse Graves
“Finally, brethren, ‘whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.’” —Philippians 4:8
Children of the Living God, it is so important not to allow ungodly fortresses to be built in our minds.
for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ… 2 Corinthians 10:4, 5
We live in a culture that bombards our senses to entice us to buy products, lure us into a vacation, or try to change or influence our beliefs and worldviews. The whole world lies in the power of the evil one (1 John 5:19) and we are pulled by all the temptations of the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life (1 John 2:16). We need to perform a literal house cleaning and remove anything in our homes that distracts our minds from our relationship with the Lord.
The following are examples of some items I found necessary to get rid of or destroy:
- Books, Records/CD’s, Media, Movies etc.
*Important Note: Be very careful to pray through this exercise and make it personal.
For instance, I was given an expensive set of china that happened to have a dragon on it. In my spirit I was not comfortable with the symbol and to me it violated my conscience toward God, so I broke them up and threw them away. However, that does not mean if I go to someone’s house and there happens to be a dragon on their oriental china that I judge them or think they should get rid of their china. It was a personal matter between me and the Lord.
The same thing holds true for many books. My spirit is extremely sensitive in this area. So, for me, many books are off limits, but not necessarily for another brother or sister in Christ.
To the pure, all things are pure (Titus 1:15) I know and am convinced in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but to him who thinks anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. (Romans 14:14)
However, be cautious: “All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify.” (1 Corinthians 10:23) For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. For it is written, ‘As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall give praise to God.’ So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God.” (Romans 14:10-12) Do not insult the Spirit of grace. (Hebrews 10:29)
Please call upon wisdom in these matters. Not long ago, I was given a Chinese souvenir by a sweet Chinese waitress that God gave us the privilege of helping to lead to the Lord. So, that pagan gift is precious to me. I don’t display it but I keep it to remember to pray for her and thank God for His grace in saving her.
- Certain statues, Totem poles, Buddha figures and things that are representative of idols or false religions. Dream catchers hanging on rear view mirrors, etc.
*Important Note: The next few suggestions are just some ideas to help you think of others venues where the evil one may have gotten a foot hold.
- Magic 8 balls, tarot cards, items with occult symbolism. Do think about book covers and art.
- Things done in secret.
“Then He said to me, ‘Son of man, do you see what the elders of the house of Israel are committing in the dark, each man in the room of his carved images? For they say, ‘The Lord does not see us; the Lord has forsaken the land.’” Ezekiel 8:12
“’Woe to those who deeply hide their plans from the Lord and whose deedsare done in a dark place, and they say, ‘Who sees?’ or’ Who knows us?’” Isaiah 29:15
“Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.” Ephesians 5:11-13
King Josiah is a beacon in the darkness on these issues:
“Moreover, Josiah removed the mediums and the spiritists and the teraphim and the idols and all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, that he might confirm the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the Lord. Before him there was no king like him who turned to the Lord with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; nor did any like him arise after him.” 2 Kings 24, 25
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6, 7
May our Gracious and Merciful God grant us the ability to love him with all our heart and soul and might, so that we may serve Him in spirit, body and mind to the praise of His glorious Name. Amen.
